Jameson Becomes the NFL's Official Spirits Sponsor, Taking the Seat Diageo Declined to Renew

Jameson has announced a multiyear partnership making the Pernod Ricard whiskey brand the official spirits sponsor of the NFL.

The deal unites the world's top Irish whiskey, per Drinks International data cited by the brand, with the most-watched sport in the U.S.

The seat Diageo left

Jameson replaces Diageo. The marketer of Smirnoff Vodka, Crown Royal Canadian Whisky and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum was the league's first such partner but did not renew its five-year deal.

An incumbent declining to renew, a challenger signing multiyear — a contrast worth noting given conditions in the spirits market.

Colin Kavanagh, CMO of Pernod Ricard North America, said:

"Football is a sport driven by passion, ritual, and unforgettable community connections — values that lie at the very heart of Jameson. Whether you're raising a glass at a hometown tailgate, watching from a local neighborhood bar, or tuning in from across the globe, Jameson is proud to elevate the fan experience and toast to every major moment of the season."

The scope of rights

The partnership runs across broadcast, digital and social channels, with custom media integrations and footage from NFL Films.

Jameson holds exclusive marketing rights and designations across the NFL's top events:

  • Super Bowl Tailgate Concert — presenting sponsor
  • Super Bowl fan festival — custom on-site fan activations and branded bar spaces
  • NFL draft
  • NFL combine

Global rights are the real prize

The notable clause is global league rights, excluding Brazil and Mexico, covering the league's expansion into new markets.

Next season, NFL teams will play nine games spanning four continents, seven countries and eight stadiums. Jameson will sponsor four NFL International Games per year, rolling out on-site activations, in-stadium ads and hospitality engagement.

This is a US sports sponsorship bought together with an international expansion path. Entering as the league globalises makes the timing itself part of the strategy.

Renie Anderson, NFL executive vice president and chief revenue officer, called Jameson "a world-class brand known for bringing people together, making them the perfect partner to enrich our fan engagement."

Team-level partnerships

The deal also expands relationships with individual teams: the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Those include localised fan opportunities, consumer sweepstakes and neighbourhood activations in key markets — local execution layered on national rights.

The market backdrop

This bet was not placed in favourable conditions.

Parent company Pernod Ricard saw organic net sales increase just 0.1% in Q3 fiscal 2026, contending with soft spirits demand in key markets including the U.S. and China and a volatile global environment marked by conflict in the Middle East.

A multiyear investment in major sports sponsorship, committed while growth is flat.

What marketers should take from it

A sponsorship vacancy is an entry opportunity. Diageo declining to renew likely improved Jameson's negotiating position. Assets a category leader walks away from get repriced.

Read domestic rights and global expansion together. Securing global rights while the NFL's internationalisation plan is already public means one contract absorbing multiple market-entry costs.

Check the exclusions. Brazil and Mexico being carved out is not incidental — usually it signals existing agreements or a different market strategy. In global deals, the excluded territories describe the deal.

Prepare the internal case for brand investment under earnings pressure. A company growing net sales 0.1% needs an argument to justify multiyear sponsorship spend.

The NFL keeps adding to its sponsorship roster — naming Kraft Heinz its first global condiment partner in a five-year deal in March, and U.S. Bank as official bank and wealth management sponsor in April, the first time the league's banking rights had been available.
