Snap Adds 10M Daily Users — but the U.S. and Europe Stayed Flat

Snapchat added 10 million daily global active users quarter over quarter in Q2 while Snap Inc. grew year-over-year ad revenue. The complication is where that user growth came from.

Growth abroad, stagnation at home

Snapchat's U.S. daily audience remained flat and its European base was nearly flat quarter over quarter. Snapchat regained a million daily actives in Europe, but the vast majority of growth still comes from the "Rest of World" category, with significant gains in India.

That matters because Snapchat generates far more income per user in the U.S. and EU. The company reported in June that advertisers in India "grew 10x over the past two years," but stalled growth in its key advertising markets leaves Snap more dependent on expanding ad opportunities and new revenue areas.

Revenue and subscriptions

Snap brought in about $1.6 billion in Q2, up 4% from Q1 and 19% year over year. CEO Evan Spiegel said advertising revenue grew 9% year over year while other revenue streams, including Snapchat+ subscriptions, grew 85% year over year to $316 million.

A significant driver was Lens+, which provides early access to Snap's most advanced AR and AI features, alongside expanded Memories storage subscriptions.

Still, fewer than 3% of Snapchat's monthly active users are paying subscribers — underlining that, at this stage, subscription social media is not a viable replacement for ad revenue.

Spotlight's reversal

On usage, Spiegel said the number of people posting to Spotlight, Snapchat's TikTok-like surface, grew more than 115% year over year while Spotlight daily viewers grew more than 20%. It is notable that the win came from replicating another platform's feature: Instagram famously took Snapchat's Stories concept in 2016 and stalled its momentum, and Snap is now running the same play in reverse.

Spiegel also said Snapchat's U.S. audience over 35 is growing quarter over quarter, which should widen advertiser opportunities, while monthly active users edge closer to a billion.

For advertisers

Split reach planning by region. In the U.S. and EU, treat Snapchat as a frequency and creative problem inside an existing audience rather than a source of incremental reach.

Revisit targeting assumptions. Growth in the over-35 U.S. audience contradicts the habit of filing Snapchat away as a teen-only channel.

Watch Spotlight inventory. More posters means more short-form inventory — worth benchmarking rates and performance against other platforms this quarter.
