Pinterest Hits 640M Users — but Growth Came Only From Lower-Value Markets

Pinterest added 9 million monthly active users quarter over quarter in Q2 2026 and grew ad revenue as the app became a more viable home for product discovery. But where that platform growth came from is the story.

Growth in the wrong places

Pinterest is now up to 640 million MAU. However, it lost two million users in Europe during the quarter, while U.S. and Canada growth stayed flat. All of the net growth came from the "Rest of World" segment, which is less valuable to the business at this stage.

Average revenue per user is significantly higher in the U.S. and Canada and in Europe, so losing momentum there has an outsized effect on earnings potential. Usage in those regions has now been mostly stagnant for three quarters, which could indicate saturation — especially since Pinterest launched a major marketing push in April specifically designed to bring more users in, without an uptick in signups.

Revenue is still climbing

Revenue nonetheless reached $1.18 billion in Q2, up about 18% year over year, helped by increased relevance from AI improvements and refinements to its ad tools.

"AI is at the heart of our momentum and is a clear accelerant for our business," said CEO Bill Ready. "It is trained on our unique human curation of style and taste, making Pinterest more personalized and actionable for users, while improving performance for advertisers and creating more opportunities to monetize over the long term."

On the product side, Pinterest showcased AI assistant tools that give users more ways to find relevant content, and improvements to its Performance+ AI-powered ad tools, which let marketers tap its consumer insights.

What advertisers should take from it

The numbers suggest Pinterest is likely at peak usage in its key markets. At the same time, shopping-related insight from 640 million users can drive better relevance and matching, which could make advertising to that cohort more valuable rather than less.

Two practical implications. If Pinterest is in the plan as a reach expansion play in North America or Europe, do not budget for incremental audience growth. If it is in the plan for match quality — product discovery, catalog integration, seasonal campaigns — this is the quarter to verify with your own data whether the AI tooling improvements actually show up in performance.
