OpenAI DevDay 2026 Recap — ChatGPT Becomes a Shared Workspace for People and Agents
OpenAI DevDay 2026 introduced the always-on agent Dots, GPT-6.1 Sol and ChatGPT Spaces. A recap of the shift from model races to work platforms.

Meta announced a training partnership with North America's Building Trades Unions (NABTU) to support skilled trades workers across the U.S. Working alongside Meta's previously announced Workforce Academy, the deal will develop registered apprenticeship programs tied to data center construction. Meta framed it around demand: "The people building this infrastructure are essential to the AI economy, and Meta and NABTU share a commitment to ensuring these workers have real access to the training, credentials, and full-time jobs this moment requires."
This did not land in a friendly environment.
The complaints are concrete: water contamination, utility disruption, road damage. Meta keeps restating community benefits and sustainable construction commitments, but on-the-ground experience and corporate messaging have visibly diverged.
The core of the opposition is a belief that the locality absorbs the costs while the benefits go elsewhere. An apprenticeship program addresses that belief directly: train local workers into full-time roles and the benefit stays in the region. Partnering with unions also borrows a trusted messenger rather than relying on corporate voice alone.

Earlier this week Mark Zuckerberg published a wide-ranging essay outlining "AI superintelligence for everyone," describing a personalized AI agent that advises on health, career, finances, and relationships. For that vision to work, users have to hand Meta more of their personal data.
Which runs into trust. Public perception of Meta on data usage remains negative, and adverse coverage of data centers does not improve it. The shape of the problem: the data centers built to power the AI are eroding the trust the AI would need. The essay itself is covered in Zuckerberg's 6,500-Word AI Manifesto, and the trust gap in Meta's AI Plans Run Into a Trust Problem.
This is not only an infrastructure story. The same structure applies to any business putting physical facilities into a community.
Once sentiment starts slowing the project itself, communications stops being a PR function and becomes a line item on the build schedule.
It develops registered apprenticeship programs tied to data center construction, supporting training for skilled trades workers. It runs alongside Meta's previously announced Workforce Academy.
Per a Time report, only about a third of Americans approve of the current pace of development, more than 300 localities have passed bans or moratoriums, and 142 protests occurred across 42 states on July 18.
Water contamination, disruption to utilities including power and water supply, and road damage.
Meta's personalized AI agent vision requires users to entrust it with personal data. Negative sentiment around data centers makes building that trust harder.
