Has Google Demoted Listicles? A 60,000-Query Study Says Yes — but Only Surgically

Has Google Demoted Listicles? A 60,000-Query Study Says Yes — but Only Surgically

"Listicles are dead" has been circulating for a year, with evidence behind it: listicles are the most-cited page type in ChatGPT answers (43.8% of 26,283 source URLs), brands flooded the web with self-serving "best of" roundups ranking themselves first, and Google's unannounced mid-January update cost several SaaS brands 29–49% of organic visibility within weeks. And yet listicles are still everywhere in actual search results. Growth strategist Kevin Indig — formerly SEO lead at Shopify, G2, and Atlassian — pulled 60,000 US queries across 15 verticals, 5.32 million organic result rows, to settle it.

What the data shows

No universal penalty

At least one listicle appeared in the top 10 for 55.1% of queries, and in the top three for 32.3%. Listicles are not dead. The biggest deciding factor is the query itself: when users explicitly ask for a set — ideas, examples, options, best — listicles took 54.5% of top-three slots. When the list intent is only implicit, that falls to 10.2%. Google shows lists to people who ask for lists.

But a quiet cull did happen

Comparing a fixed subset of 2,400 queries between January and August: listicle share at position one fell from roughly 19–20% to about 15%, and across the top three from 36–39% to 32–33%. That's the ~4-point targeted demotion behind the anecdotes. Notably, it wasn't a blanket hit on self-promotion: 62% of vendor-authored listicles gained estimated organic traffic since January, with the median page up 38%. Indig's read: Google targeted the flood of poor, AI-scaled listicles, with quality and publishing velocity as the spam markers — not the format itself.

The real problem is clicks, not rankings

92% of SERPs with a top-10 listicle also carried Reddit or YouTube, and AI Overviews appeared on up to 93.4% of B2B listicle-related results — the vertical where listicles are most common. When Reddit shows up in the top 10, it's in the top three 70.7% of the time (average position 3.31). A page can hold its position and still lose the attention to communities, video, and AI summaries. Present but unclicked is the listicle's current condition.

Our take: before writing "we're #1," have the evidence to back it

The vertical split is the strategic tell: brand or vendor listicles appeared on 46.2% of B2B software SERPs versus 3.3% in food — AI-citation listicle plays are essentially a B2B game. If you're in it, Indig's test is the right one: can your review ratings or market position actually support ranking yourself first? Unsupported self-listicles are the obvious target of the next January-style update.

And independent of rankings, measure these pages on incremental contribution rather than clicks — staying on the leaderboard no longer guarantees revenue impact, the exact argument of When Review Content Turns Parasitic — Measure Incrementality, Not Attribution. Whether you file this work under SEO or AI search optimization matters less than doing it — as 81% of Marketers Still Call It SEO — How the AI Search Naming War Actually Ended concluded, the job is the same: bring evidence-backed lists to list-intent queries, at a quality that can compete with Reddit, YouTube, and the AI answer above you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Google penalize listicles?

Not universally. Across 60,000 queries, listicles still appeared on 55.1% of SERPs. But a targeted demotion is real: listicle share at position one and in the top three dropped roughly 4 points between January and August, most likely aimed at low-quality, AI-scaled listicles.

Which queries still favor listicles?

Explicit-list queries — best, top, ideas, options, alternatives. There, listicles took 54.5% of top-three positions, versus 10.2% for implicit category or comparison queries. Match the format to list intent.

Are self-serving listicles that rank the brand first dead?

Not by the data — 62% of vendor-authored listicles gained traffic since January, median +38%. The dividing line is evidence: if review ratings or market position can support the claim, the play still works; without support, it's the next update's target.

If my listicle keeps its ranking, will it keep its clicks?

Don't count on it. 92% of listicle SERPs also carry Reddit or YouTube, and up to 93.4% of B2B listicle queries show AI Overviews. Positions are holding better than attention — measure these pages on incremental contribution, not traffic.
