Threads Gems is a new recognition program for posts and replies “that drive meaningful conversations.” If your post or reply is marked as a Threads Gem, you’ll be notified and can share a special post about it, or decline the recognition. The feature was spotted in testing in August by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi.
The three criteria behind a Gem
Gem posts display a special icon in-stream. Threads says selection is automatic and based on:
- Perspective: the post brings a fresh take and unique value to the discussion.
- Discussion: it sparks genuine back-and-forth dialogue.
- Originality: it’s the creator’s own work, “not something recycled from elsewhere online.”
Posts crossposted from another app aren’t eligible. Meta uses systematic detection rather than human evaluation.
Scope and limits
Gems apply only to public posts. For replies, only direct replies to a post count, not replies to replies. For now, only U.S. users are eligible.
X tried something similar with “Bangers,” a monthly showcase of its most engaging posts, then stopped after one month. Automated selection should make Gems easier to sustain. The flip side, Social Media Today notes, is that an algorithm rewarding conversation could surface offensive posts that spark debate, so some human vetting seems likely.
Why brands should care
Gems spell out, in public, what Threads considers a good post. Perspective, discussion and originality are useful signals for how the platform may favor content well beyond the badge itself.
What marketers should take from this
Stop recycling Instagram posts
Crossposts are excluded. Write natively for Threads. The same originality principle runs through Meta’s other apps, as covered in Instagram Algorithm Explained by Mosseri: Four Principles and Posting Tips for Creators.
Ask questions instead of making announcements
The bar is conversation. Industry opinions and practical questions give people something to reply to; product announcements rarely do. Direct replies from brand accounts can qualify too, so treat comment management as content.
Pair Gems with Stories
A Gem comes with a shareable post, giving you a second round of reach. For connecting Threads to Instagram Stories, see Instagram Adds a Threads Sharing Sticker for Stories.
