Loyalty program marketing just got a playful mechanic. Southwest Airlines launched “Enter Airplane Mode,” which turns notification overload into rewards. Users scan a QR code and upload a screenshot of their home screen notifications to earn Rapid Rewards points, and they can take a burnout quiz for vacation recommendations and more points.
Why Southwest launched it
A first move from a new marketing chief
The campaign is the first under Sabrina Callahan, the airline's inaugural chief digital and marketing officer. Southwest wants a bigger digital presence and a stronger rewards program; Rapid Rewards enrollment grew 35% year over year in Q2, and membership is nearing 100 million.
Burnout as the shared insight
A Southwest-sponsored survey found that 76% of Americans feel burned out and 68% see trips as one of the few times they feel in control of their time. The survey of 2,001 Americans also found about 75% leave paid time off unused and 34% haven't taken a trip longer than two days in more than a year.
The creative and the team
GSD&M, Southwest's longtime creative partner, built the campaign. Spots are directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon and narrated by “Severance” actor Adam Scott. In “Meetings,” an office worker buried in meeting requests finds relief on a Southwest flight; the 15-second “Mass Transit” trades a grim commute for air travel. Each ad asks whether viewers have “hit their booking point,” a play on “breaking point.”
Later is the creator agency on the campaign, and Sparks Foundry handles media.
Why points resonate right now
Fuel costs tied to the Iran war pushed airfare up 21% year over year earlier this year. Barclays' 2025 Travel Rewards and Loyalty Report found nearly 80% of travelers rely on loyalty programs and 72% of millennials use rewards to stretch travel budgets, so giving away points makes a vacation feel more reachable. Southwest posted record Q2 operating revenue of $8.4 billion.
What this means for marketers
Turn everyday behavior into participation
A screenshot takes seconds, which keeps the barrier to entry low. Look for a habit your customers already have that connects to your brand promise. If you're targeting year-end travel, pair it with the booking-window data in Google’s Holiday Travel Trends 2026: Book Domestic Flights 39 Days Out and Christmas Trips 56 Days Ahead.
Back the message with your own data
Southwest anchored its burnout theme in proprietary survey numbers that also feed press coverage. Even a small pre-launch survey gives you proof points for ads and announcements.
