Google began rolling out the August 2026 spam update on August 18. The notice posted to Google's Search Status Dashboard is short: the update applies globally and to all languages, and the rollout may take a few days to complete.
Three things, and no more. The update has started rolling out. It is not limited to a region or a language. It will take several days to finish.
Google did not say what the update targets, which spam signals were reweighted, or which policy areas got attention. That is standard for spam updates — the published spam policies remain the only reference document, and they were not revised alongside this release.
This is the third Google spam update announced in 2026. The previous one shipped in June.
This is the distinction that gets blurred most often in practice. A core update adjusts how Google assesses quality across search results generally. A spam update refreshes the systems that identify content and sites violating Google's spam policies.
The difference shows up in the recovery path. Sites hit by a core update usually need to improve the substance of the content itself, and often have to wait for a subsequent core update. Sites hit by a spam update need to remove the violating element and get reassessed the next time the spam systems refresh. Neither recovers in a day.
Because the rollout runs over several days, movement before the completion notice is not a final result. Rewriting a site mid-rollout destroys your ability to tell what caused what.
A workable sequence:
The awkward case is the site that never intended to spam and drops anyway. Google judges patterns, not intent. Bulk-generated informational content, affiliate sections bolted onto an unrelated site, and subdirectories handed to an outside operator can all resemble spam patterns regardless of motive. If your brand has sharply increased publishing volume recently, this rollout is the first real test of that decision.
If you were not hit, treat it as a deferral rather than an exemption. Spam systems refresh two or three times a year, and the threshold moves up a little each time. As covered in Why SEO Uncertainty Is Creating Openings for Challengers, volatility periods open gaps when incumbents shift into defense — but only for brands with content assets ready to move into them.
For most brands, getting ready is less about new tactics than about clearing a backlog. The items in Most AI Visibility Gains Are Just Technical Debt Repayment — consolidating duplicates, merging thin pages, indexing hygiene — overlap almost entirely with a spam-update readiness checklist. Running that work continuously costs less than reacting to each announcement.
Google said only that it may take a few days and did not commit to a date. A completion notice will appear on the Search Status Dashboard. Until then, ranking movement should be read as an intermediate state.
A core update adjusts general search quality assessment; a spam update refreshes the systems that catch spam policy violations. Recovery from a spam update means removing the violating element and being reassessed at the next refresh.
Google judges patterns, not intent. Scaled content, unrelated affiliate sections, and outsourced subdirectories are common triggers. Pin down the date and the scope of the decline in Search Console first, then walk the spam policies against what you actually publish.
Better not to. Changes made mid-rollout make it impossible to separate the update's effect from your own edits. Wait for the completion notice, gather data, then act.
