Meta is trying out a new ad option that auto-generates a DM to any user who posts a selected keyword in a comment on an Instagram ad. Spotted by Meta ads expert Jon Loomer, the Reply to Keywords option is appearing in some advertisers' ad setup tools, described plainly: "save time by automatically sending a private message when people comment with a keyword."
How it works
Advertisers choose up to five keywords; each one triggers a pre-written auto-DM when posted as a comment on a promoted post. Put "comment INFO for details" in the ad, and commenters automatically receive the details, link, or coupon by DM — a single comment becoming the entry point of a lead nurturing flow. For now it appears only in Instagram ad setup, not Facebook.
A version of this already existed in Meta's inbox automation and Meta Business Agent tools. The difference is placement: it's now wired directly into ad creation, so the comment-to-DM flow gets designed in the same place the ad does — no separate automation setup.
Why it matters
Meta keeps building DMs into a business channel as consumer interaction shifts from feeds to messaging, and keyword-triggered DMs are the simplest possible form of that. In an age of conversational AI, keyword matching feels almost too simple — but simplicity layered on an existing habit is precisely why it converts. "Comment X and I'll DM you the link" is already a standard creator-marketing tactic; this productizes it for advertisers.
Our take: design what happens after the DM, not the comment count
The trap is making comment volume the goal. Keyword comments do feed the algorithm engagement signals and extend reach, but the outcome is decided by what recipients do after the DM arrives. Decide what the auto-DM carries — one link, a coupon, or an opening question that starts a conversation — and script the follow-up handling. An auto-DM with no follow-through erodes trust rather than building it.
Timing-wise, this is still a test and not visible in every account, but Meta tends to formalize these features fast — it ships creator and ad tooling on an almost weekly cadence, as we covered in Edits Adds Folder Management and Image-to-Video — Meta Ships Almost Weekly. And with comments and captions now doing double duty across ads and search, pair this with Instagram Published Its Caption Playbook — Captions Are Search Text Now: weaving the keyword prompt naturally into ad copy is now part of creative planning itself.
