Athleta Borrows Gap's Comeback Playbook — Same Consultancy, Sharper Message

Athleta Borrows Gap's Comeback Playbook — Same Consultancy, Sharper Message

Gap Inc. spent recent years reviving its namesake brand through culturally relevant marketing, producing 10 consecutive quarters of comparable sales growth and restoring appeal with younger shoppers. The company is now trying to move that magic to Athleta, and the fall 2026 campaign "My World. My Rules." is the opening move.

Gap is up 10%, Athleta is down 11%

The two scorecards have split. For the quarter ended May 2, Athleta's comparable sales fell 11% while Gap's rose 10% over the same period. Gap Inc. last year brought in Nike veteran Maggie Gauger as global brand president and CEO to steer the Athleta turnaround, and has described 2026 as a "rebuild" year for the activewear brand.

On the most recent earnings call, Gap Inc. CEO Richard Dickson said the company recognizes it will take time for its actions to translate into an improved growth profile, while calling Athleta an important brand in the portfolio that the company is focused on rebuilding for long-term growth.

Dropping safe empowerment

Athleta has marketed around women's empowerment for years. The 2024 multiphase campaign "Find Your Movement" ran on the same theme and failed to produce a meaningful bounceback.

Erika Everett, the longtime Gap Inc. executive who became Athleta CMO last October, acknowledges the brand's past approach played it safer. Her read on the current moment — when purpose-driven messaging is under fire amid divisive politics — is that it calls for "more celebration of how incredible women are." She describes the campaign as "the clearest and sharpest point of view that we've really had around who we are and how we want to show up in the world," adding that it is "a little bit more bold than where this brand's been in the past. It's a little bit more provocative."

The hero spot follows three women who made their mark in typically male-dominated fields: archer and artist Sagg Napoli, martial artist and stunt performer Jewelianna Ramos-Ortiz, and motorsport athlete Jordan Rand, each practicing their craft against a stark Icelandic landscape, scored to "Selfish Soul" by Sudan Archives.

The consultancy that fixed Gap is back

The execution structure is the notable part. Athleta previously developed much of its larger platform work in-house. This time it partnered with Invisible Dynamics, the brand transformation consultancy behind Gap's comeback. Athleta went through months of transformation work to arrive at "My World. My Rules." and is simultaneously investing in building out internal creative teams.

The aesthetic shifted to match the "female-first world" ambition: people depicted in nature, hence the on-location shoot in Iceland, and moments engineered to stop a social scroll. "We have a point of view that deserves to be seen, that I believe will stand out, but you have to be pretty relentless and persistent on how you're tackling that message, and you have to show up in a way that is visually arresting and visually interesting," Everett said.

Product and touchpoints move with it

The fall campaign also bridges everyday and performance attire on the assortment side, placing items like pleated pants alongside technical outerwear and workout gear. Several competitors have struggled pushing outside the performance category, but Athleta sees an edge: "We're one of the only brands at our size and scale who's really focusing strictly on women and girls," Everett said, adding that she sees opportunity to take market share.

There is a live-experience bet too. Athleta is sponsoring Olivia Rodrigo's first Daisy Chain Fields Festival on Aug. 29, whose lineup spans generations of breakthrough female artists including Chappell Roan and Stevie Nicks. The onsite Athleta World experience offers a cool-off area, activities like guided meditation, and exclusive merchandise.

One last detail: the direction has sign-off from founder Scott Kerslake, who sold the company to Gap nearly 20 years ago. Everett relays his verdict — "This is the brand that I built" — a contrast with rivals that have butted heads with founders while trying to find their footing after setbacks.

What practitioners should take from it

The lesson is not that Athleta abandoned empowerment. It kept the theme and changed the sharpness of the point of view, after eight-plus years of saying a version of the same thing without a rebound. Any brand can make a broad statement about women's empowerment. Three named women who wrote their own rules in male-dominated fields is not a statement any brand can make.

The timing call is worth noting too: raising the volume on purpose messaging precisely when purpose messaging is drawing fire. The implicit calculation is that the safe ground is crowded, and eight years of standing on it produced no growth. The risk is equally clear — if Athleta's problem was product and distribution rather than message, this campaign repeats the last one's result. The verdict shows up in next quarter's comparable sales, not in the creative.
