AI Search Visibility Runs Through Social Media — Social Links Appear in 67.66% of Google AI Overviews

If you want better AI search visibility, your website is only part of the picture. SE Ranking analyzed 100,000 keywords across a range of brand niches to see which sources show up in Google results and AI chatbot answers. Social platform links appeared in 67.66% of Google AI Overviews, which means an active social presence now affects how brands surface inside AI-generated answers.

AI search visibility by platform

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Social links were cited in 67.66% of Google AI Overviews, 32.39% of Google AI Mode replies and 8.4% of ChatGPT answers. YouTube, owned by Google, was the most commonly cited source in AI Overviews.

Looking at AI Mode alone, social sources appeared in 39.34% of responses to branded queries and 48.58% of responses to non-branded queries, with Facebook, YouTube and Reddit cited most often. In other words, social content shows up even more when people search without a brand name in mind.

ChatGPT leans on Reddit and LinkedIn

Reddit and LinkedIn were the social platforms ChatGPT referenced most. Still, Reddit, LinkedIn and Facebook each appeared in fewer than 1% of ChatGPT answers to common queries, so social is not yet a major factor there.

The rules differ by platform, and they change fast

Reddit shows how volatile this channel can be. In August, Search Engine Land reported that Reddit's share of ChatGPT search citations fell 86.4% in four days, for reasons that remain unclear. Google, meanwhile, has a commercial data-sharing deal with Reddit, and Reddit citations in Google's AI answers have stayed steady.

Unlike SEO, which was largely about one search engine, AI visibility needs a platform-by-platform approach. Betting on a single channel is risky.

What this means for marketers

Treat social channels as search assets

YouTube videos, LinkedIn posts and Facebook Page updates are being used as source material for AI answers. Instead of judging social only by followers and reach, check whether your channels hold content that answers the questions your buyers actually ask. If Google AI Overviews matter most, prioritize YouTube; if ChatGPT matters, give LinkedIn more weight.

Measure citations, not just rankings

A page can keep its ranking and still be left out of AI answers. We covered that gap in Ranking Well but Missing From AI Answers — Why Zero-Click GEO Needs a Different Playbook Than SEO. A practical first step is to pick your core queries and track, on a regular schedule, whether your brand or channels are cited in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT.
