YouTube has made Ask YouTube, its AI-powered conversational search, available to all U.S. users. Testing began in 2023, then expanded to desktop and connected TV. Now the feature has reached the mobile app, so AI-assisted discovery works in every version of YouTube.
What Ask YouTube does differently
Instead of keywords, users ask in full sentences. YouTube says the tool lets people "ask complex queries, refine with follow-up questions, and receive results in an interactive format, whether they're on the go or using voice commands from the couch."
- Complex queries: multi-condition questions in one go.
- Follow-ups: narrow results by adding constraints.
- Mobile and TV: search on the move, or by voice in the living room.
Why now
Conversational search is going mainstream. Pew Research found earlier this year that around half of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots, up from one-third in 2024. As people get used to asking AI everywhere, YouTube wants to meet that demand inside its own app.
Social Media Today called it YouTube's most significant AI integration, since conversational discovery can fuel deeper dives into topics within the app.
What changes for video marketers
Answer the whole question
Longer, conditional queries reward videos that clearly address a specific situation and audience — not just a single keyword in the title.
Cover the follow-ups
Because users refine as they go, a series that breaks a topic down by level, tool or scenario has more chances to surface in sequence.
Plan for voice on TV
Voice queries on connected TV will grow too. Co-viewing content should anticipate how people phrase questions out loud.
How to adapt your YouTube SEO
- Rewrite titles, descriptions and chapters around real questions your customers ask.
- Say the answer on camera. Clear spoken answers and captions help AI understand the content.
- Build series for follow-up questions rather than one-off videos.
