X is using its Grok AI system to crack down on engagement bait — posts that artificially solicit interaction — with a particular focus on accounts in its creator revenue-share program.
The core rule: no begging for engagement
Under the new policy, accounts that repeatedly (three or more times) explicitly beg for interaction — phrases like "I'll follow back everyone who replies" — are removed from the revenue program and can face account-level enforcement. The goal is to eliminate artificially inflated engagement used to game monetization.
Cracking down on repost and repackaged content
X has also strengthened detection of repackaged or aggregated content. Product lead Nikita Bier said that even when a post is edited with a watermark or intro, monetized exposure will now be attributed to the original uploader. In this enforcement cycle, X identified 1.5 million instances of stolen posts.
The financial impact is significant: payouts to content-aggregator accounts have dropped roughly 80% this year, and the changes are expected to redistribute over $1 million to original creators. Accounts that repeatedly evade anti-duplication policies will be removed from the program entirely. X says roughly 20% of its users produce all of the platform's content — making protecting that group's monetization central to platform sustainability.
What this means for marketers
This policy signals that social platform monetization algorithms are shifting from rewarding raw engagement bait toward rewarding authentic originality. Growth tactics built on explicitly begging for follows or retweets, or lightly re-editing someone else's content, now risk AI-based detection and account-level penalties. Brands and creator marketing programs should shift investment away from short-term engagement-inflation tactics and toward original perspectives and original production.
The fact that monetization now follows the original uploader even through watermarks and intros means brands working with influencers and agencies need clear content-provenance and ownership management. As more platforms likely adopt similar AI-based authenticity checks, building a content operation centered on owned, original assets is the safer long-term bet.
