Meta’s political ad restriction period for the U.S. midterms is coming up. From Tuesday, Oct. 27, through Tuesday, Nov. 3, no new ads about social issues, elections or politics can run in the U.S. Like many media outlets, Meta uses the window to give the public a break from campaign messaging and to curb manipulative last-minute tactics.
What you can and can’t do during the window
New ads in these categories are blocked. Ads that served at least one impression before 12:01 a.m. PT on Oct. 27 can keep running.
Editing is limited. Advertisers can adjust the bid, budget and scheduled end date, and can pause or unpause those ads. “No other editing capabilities are permitted,” Meta says, including creative, placement, targeting or optimization.
It’s not only about candidates
Meta treats ads made by or on behalf of a candidate, political figure or political action group as political ads. Its U.S. social issues list covers:
- Civil and social rights, crime, economy, education
- Environmental politics, guns, health, immigration
- Political values and governance, security and foreign policy
Brand messaging that leans on topics such as the economy, health or the environment can fall into the social issues category, so any brand running U.S. campaigns should review its creative.
Key dates
- Oct. 13: deadline to complete the ad authorization process if you want to run political or social issue ads during the window.
- Oct. 20: Meta recommends submitting ads for approval by this date so they’re live with a valid disclaimer and have delivered at least one impression before the window.
- Oct. 27–Nov. 3: restriction period.
What marketers should take from this
Audit U.S. creative now
Check for copy that might be classified as a social issue. Once the window starts, creative can’t be edited, so finish any changes before Oct. 27.
Lock settings, then get that first impression
Targeting and optimization are frozen during the window too. For campaigns that will run into the holiday season, finalize settings and secure an impression early.
