Backlash over Meta's AI-powered glasses and their potential for misuse keeps rising. A cut-off switch for the device could address some key regulatory concerns — and it appears Meta has been building exactly that.
A patent filed in February
Patentlyze recently reported on a Meta patent for an AI glasses kill switch, filed back in February. According to the patent, Meta wants to implement a hardware mute switch inside the devices that would essentially cut the glasses off from all connected functions, including recording and AI connectivity.
That would give wearers a way to reassure people around them that the device is completely disconnected and unable to record in any way.
The bans came first — UK pubs to DEF CON
That reassurance matters because many venues are already moving to ban Meta AI glasses from their facilities.
Earlier this month, The Guardian reported that U.K. restaurants and pubs are moving to ban Meta glasses "in order to preserve the privacy of customers and staff," while theaters and movie chains are implementing bans of their own. The Register reported that attendees of DEF CON 2026 were barred from wearing Meta glasses in sessions, because they could be used to create unauthorized recordings.

The patent's actual purpose is slightly different
One detail is worth flagging. According to Patentlyze, reassuring bystanders is not the main intention. The primary purpose of the kill switch is to ensure the device cannot be accessed by outside sources and used to make recordings against the user's will. The design starting point is protecting the wearer, not third parties.
It happens to touch both problems, but a different priority can produce a different final implementation.
The unsolved part: how does anyone else know?
For the feature to be effective, one question remains open: how will people around the wearer be able to tell that a device has been completely disconnected?
A state only the wearer can see does not solve a trust problem. What venues adopting bans want is not an assurance that a wearer decided not to record, but an externally verifiable signal that the device cannot record right now. A definitive off button that converts the glasses back into regular glasses is a valuable addition — assuming Meta can find a way to provide external reassurance that the restriction is active.
Why marketers should care
This is not only a hardware story.
Smart glasses are an attractive touchpoint candidate: information in the field of view, contextual prompts inside a store, hands-free interaction. What is currently blocking the category is not feature maturity but bystander trust. It is not the wearer rejecting the device — it is the person standing next to the wearer.
Two practical consequences. First, if you are planning a wearable-based campaign or in-store experience, venue-level bans are a real constraint, not a hypothetical one. As restaurants, theaters, and event spaces add restrictions, plans that assume those environments can stall at execution. Second, privacy signaling is not a feature add-on; it is a precondition for adoption.
