Meta is phasing out manual ad placement controls so its AI-driven delivery system can show ads wherever it predicts they'll perform best. To soften the change, Meta has published guidance on the controls advertisers still have.
What's being removed
Advertisers could previously exclude placements such as Facebook search results or in-stream ads between Reels. Meta is removing those exclusions.
- Already removed: engagement, leads, app promotion and sales objectives
- Still available for now: awareness and traffic objectives
- All objectives will likely lose manual placement control soon, which affects campaign planning.
Four controls Meta says remain
1. Customize media by placement
Multi-media ads and media customization in the new Ads Manager creative workflow let you upload multiple images and videos into one ad and customize aspect ratio, text, URL and delivery settings per asset. Meta then matches creative to placement.
2. Placement value rules
With placement value rules, you can raise or lower bids for specific placements based on how much their conversions are worth to your business. Instead of switching a placement off, you tell Meta to value it less.
3. Account-level exclusions
Advertisers can still set account-level placement exclusions by objective in account control tools.
4. Partnership ads
When running partnership ads with Advantage+ placements, advertisers keep control at the creation step over media and text, and can manage where the partnership appears if it is limited to specific placements after selecting a post.
What to do now
- Pull placement-level CPA from current campaigns to set evidence-based value rules.
- Build assets for every format, vertical for Reels and Stories and square for Feed, so automated delivery doesn't fall back to poor crops.
- Move brand safety exclusions to the account level before campaign-level options disappear.
- Benchmark awareness and traffic campaigns with automatic placements now, before the switch is forced.
