Kakao's AI Commerce Push: Recommendations Are Done, Checkout Is the Test

Kakao is expanding its AI commerce experiments inside KakaoTalk. The app now suggests who to send a gift to from the friends tab, and finds venues from conversational context before carrying the user through to a booking.

Closing the loop inside one app

The intent is clear: keep demand discovered inside KakaoTalk from leaking out, and complete search, recommendation, booking and payment in a single flow. Monetisation comes from advertising, brokerage, payment fees and higher transaction volume.

There is real scale underneath. Last year Kakao posted KRW 10.6 trillion in combined annual transaction value and KRW 951 billion in commerce revenue — 11.7% of total revenue. This is less a new business than an attempt to lift an existing one.

The market is not watching recommendations

Telling a user which friend to buy for, or which restaurant to visit, has a monetisation ceiling. Recommendations are interesting; they are not revenue.

So the evaluation narrows to one question: do recommendations convert into completed payments? Kakao's estimated second-quarter results stand at KRW 2.05 trillion in revenue and KRW 226.3 billion in operating profit, with proof of the agent's checkout completion expected in early August.

What it means for brands

When a platform contains discovery through payment inside one app, pulling traffic out to your own store gets harder. The flip side: brands that win placement inside it inherit a conversion path with no hand-off leakage.

Bottom line

  • Kakao's AI commerce is moving from the recommendation stage to the payment stage
  • The measure is conversion, not feature polish
  • Brands should recalculate the split between in-platform exposure and owned-channel traffic

If that rebalancing is on your roadmap, our services overview covers how we approach it.
