Jo Malone London, an Estée Lauder Companies brand, has made its first gaming activation on Fortnite, supporting the launch of its new Sea Salt & Bergamot Cologne.
What They Built
Until August 24, players can explore a British coast-inspired world inside Minigame Box PvP, a creator-made island. The access code is 8532-9413-6963.
The in-game experience is accompanied by a campaign featuring gaming creators, livestreams, and a social content series running on Instagram, TikTok, and Fortnite itself.
The purpose is straightforward: reach young players who would not encounter the brand on more traditional social platforms.
Renting Beats Building
This is the interesting decision. Rather than constructing a whole new island, the brand set up shop inside a prebuilt map.
Minigame Box PvP was developed by Fortnite creators Birdo and Dagwummy using Unreal Editor For Fortnite. Its scale:
- 3.6 million favorites
- 7.6 billion minutes played
Jo Malone London worked with Chartis, a user-generated games and media company, to develop a limited-time game meant to portray the "spirit" of the Sea Salt & Bergamot scent digitally.
Build your own island and you must generate the traffic yourself. Move into an established map and you sit on flow that already exists. For a brand's first gaming activation, that difference decides whether anything gets learned.
Industry Context
Marketers have increasingly turned to online sandbox games like Roblox and Fortnite to reach young consumers. In beauty, brands including E.l.f. Cosmetics have already embraced the customizable, interactive nature of these platforms.
The driver is a largely untapped audience. New technology and offerings from game companies have made integration into popular titles easier than ever, and the structure of major sandbox platforms lets brands work directly with creators.
It Is Not Frictionless
The challenges are visible too. In June, Roblox introduced Brand Link, a directory of creator-made experiences intended to streamline brand integrations and ensure activations meet its compliance and measurement standards.
The background matters. Roblox, known for a younger user base, has faced scrutiny over its advertising practices and is currently being investigated by the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism over child safety concerns.
On platforms with significant minor participation, age appropriateness and ad disclosure standards come before reach efficiency.
Business Backdrop
The Estée Lauder Companies reported net sales up 5% year over year for the quarter ended March 31. Fragrance grew 10% over the same period.
With fragrance outpacing the company overall, budget flowing toward new audience acquisition is a reasonable allocation.
Four Takeaways
First entry should rent, not build. A custom island offers control but requires manufacturing your own visitors. A limited-time presence inside a proven map keeps the cost of learning low.
Translate the product's sensory idea into spatial language. Turning a sea salt and bergamot scent into a British coastline is that work. It is not the same as placing a logo.
Gaming is a creator ecosystem, not a channel. Map builders, gaming creators, and livestreamers each play different roles. Borrowing a platform-native participation structure is the point — the same principle behind TikTok's Music on Stage generating 8.2 billion impressions from one hashtag.
With young audiences, regulatory risk comes first. Reaching young players cannot be the goal by itself. Research on who actually drives Gen Alpha brand choice is a reminder that decision-making authority may sit elsewhere entirely.
Bottom Line
The method here is more instructive than the scale. In an unfamiliar market, renting an asset beats building one because it accelerates learning — and the limited run through August 24 follows the same logic.
