Ahead of peak shopping season, Google released two updates that could change how marketers plan holiday promotions: its first “When to Buy” guide and the U.S.-wide rollout of Google Universal Cart.
The ‘When to Buy’ guide
Based on 2025 shopping trends, Google’s six-page guide outlines when the best deals are likely to appear across major product categories. It tells consumers when to start shopping — and gives marketers a signal for when competition in each category is likely to peak. The guide also notes key shopping trends to consider when planning promotions.
Universal Cart: one cart across Google
First announced at Google I/O in May, Universal Cart is now available to all U.S. users. Items added in different Google apps stay in one cart. Google’s example: save a Steve Madden handbag in AI Mode in Search, then a Quince sweater and Ulta Beauty lip gloss in the Gemini app, and all three are waiting when you return.
What the cart does
- Sends notifications when a saved item drops in price or comes back in stock.
- Suggests the best payment option for each purchase and surfaces relevant promo codes and offers.
- Lets shoppers check out with Google Pay in a few taps at many stores, or transfer items to the merchant’s own cart.
Simplified checkout currently works with Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants.
What marketers should do
- Plan around category deal windows. Promotions launched during the most competitive weeks face higher bids; test timing just before and after. For seasonal search data, see Google's 2026 Halloween Trends: How to Use Frightgeist Costume Data.
- Treat price-drop alerts as media. Keep Merchant Center pricing and inventory accurate in real time, because changes now trigger notifications.
- Optimize product data for AI shopping. Accurate titles, attributes and images help products get saved in AI Mode and Gemini.
- Benchmark against other platforms. TikTok’s holiday numbers are in TikTok Holiday Shopping Trends 2026.
