Chili's logged its 21st consecutive quarter of same-store sales growth in fiscal 2026 Q4. At Brinker International's investor day, CMO George Felix walked through the Chili's marketing strategy behind that streak — and hinted at where the brand's value campaign goes next.
The R.E.D. framework
Chili's runs on Relevance, Ease and Distinctiveness (R.E.D.), a framework pioneered by former Yum Brands executives Greg Creed and Ken Muench. Operations owns "ease"; marketing builds relevance and distinctiveness through brand purpose, a steady cadence of "culture pop" activations and insight-driven advertising.
'Better Than Fast Food' and the value runway
- Value perception up 50% among the general population over three years, per YouGov — the highest in its casual and fast-casual competitive set.
- Ad awareness up about 40%, but still eight points behind Chipotle. Felix sees that gap as runway.
- Since 2024, the campaign has taken on the Big Mac, the Quarter Pounder with Cheese and the chicken sandwich, turning social chatter about fast-food prices into share gains.
Mexican QSR could be next
Because Chili's already sells quesadillas and fajitas, Felix sees Mexican quick-service as a category it can win. That move may be two years out, but it signals a repeatable playbook: pick the rival guests actually weigh you against, then make the comparison.
Culture pops that keep sales up
A Lifetime movie, a Halloween costume and a Lizzo remake of the baby back ribs jingle have all fed buzz among Gen Z, which Chili's says correlates with monthly sales. "Most brands have a viral moment and their sales spike for one to three weeks," Felix said. Chili's moments have sustained.
- Earned TikTok views far outpace casual dining rivals and serve as a relevance proxy.
- Media is bifurcated: linear TV and streaming (especially sports) for reach, social for younger guests.
- Gen Z is now 25% of guests, while core fans remain engaged.
- Five key menu items doubled sales in three years; Chili's holds about 5% of a $116 billion casual dining market.
What restaurant marketers can borrow
The sharpest lesson is choosing the right comparison. Value messaging lands when you name the alternative customers actually consider — even if it sits in another category.
